"What she said..." |
1) The screen saver on your computer is a photo of your hometown.
2) The homepage is your local newspaper.
3) When you speak with your family any mention of the weather (regardless of what it is) makes you wistful. "Foggy? Really...awww."
4) You spend $25 for a pandoro (Italian cake).
5) You get defensive about incorrect portrayals of your city on film.
6) You check airplane fares on line.
7) Skyping is not enough.
8) You dream about the apricot filled croissants you eat at your favorite cafe (see photo above).
What signs do you display when you're feeling homesick?
Please feel free to add...
I get homesick when I least expect it...and when I do I run for cover.
ReplyDeleteI usually have a cup of tea and get out a book...also I embrace nostalgia rather than fight it. It usually passes on its own.
ReplyDeleteThat's a good idea, Carla.
DeleteSad movies or songs...a nice walk outdoors.
ReplyDeleteI just pick up the phone..
ReplyDeleteI look for my Italian friends here in Scotland for a chat, I watch stupid movies from the 80s that remind me of my childhood, I order Lasagne in places where the chef is clearly NOT Italian, I spend my free time on facebook looking at my old friends' pictures, and I create a Facebook fan-page for my dog in Italy...that's how sad I am...
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your thoughts here!
DeleteI make a pot of tea, check my family and friends on Facebook, count the days till summer. Last year as it got closer to June I watched Pride & Prejudice, (Matthew MacFayden/Kiera Knightley version) - and kept re-winding the misty dawn scene at the end. I even listened to the dawn chorus on youTube - birds singing, who knew I'd miss that! Then I check the weather in Ireland and I feel good that I'm in Singapore. Still miss my family though :[
ReplyDeleteI can feel your pain- I lived in Dublin and still miss it!!
DeleteSo true....I Miss home...
ReplyDeleteIt's hard at times...
DeleteWhen I start missing home too much, I just remember all things that I will not be able to do once our assignement is over here:
ReplyDeleteOne wardrobe all year round, living next to the beach, watching the fireworks at the MBS from our balcony, etc.,.
I know it's ok to miss home, but I just remember that I have to cherish my time here while I can!
Thanks Brianna-excellent attitude and very true!!
DeleteI make good old and highly fattening American "comfort" food--like Macaroni and Cheese or barbecue ribs. No wonder I've put on kilos in just 6 months of living in Singapore.
ReplyDeleteThat's making me hungry!! Good tactic, though Diana.
DeleteHi Jennifer... just wanted to let you know that your Homesickness article featured in this month's Expat Blog Carnival on my blog at http://www.rovingjay.com/expat-blog-carnival-4/ thanks, Jay
